Have you always dreamed of traveling, or even better, working abroad? Or have you perhaps been bitten recently by the “travel bug”? Either way, you are interested in the advantages of working abroad — and for good reason, since they are numerous!
Employers like employees who have experience working abroad. It shows that you have the ability to adapt to the diverse workplaces of today, you can function well under pressure, you may have extra language abilities (particularly important with today’s global business environment), and you are able to motivate yourself. A number of personal attributes are required to successfully work abroad, and the experience on your resume can only benefit you.
It isn’t just good for the employer, however — you will benefit from working abroad, too. If you’re the type of person who loves exploring new cultures, languages, and foods, interacting with people and sharing culture differences, and have a good sense of humor to overcome the inevitable barriers, you’ll thrive working abroad. You will improve your job prospects (because employers love employees who have worked abroad; see above), have fun, and get to do something that most people never will. How much you get out of your time abroad depends how much you put into it, and how much effort you exert to try and get a great experience.
You can find work in fields related to your current career, or in other jobs. Almost anyone who is a native English speaker can find a job somewhere as an English teacher, as they are in high demand right now. If you go abroad with your current employer or a new one and they are a global corporation, you might find yourself first in line for a promotion when it comes up. Even if you find another new job upon your return, you should be able to make yourself even more appealing because of your foreign experience, if you market yourself right.
You might even be able to save up, depending on the salary and cost of living in your temporary home abroad. Some countries have high salaries and low costs of living. Rather than blowing your salary on luxuries, try to save as much as you can and get ahead even more from your experience abroad.
Before making such a big decision, you must be sure it is right for you. Not everyone is suited to working abroad, for a variety of reasons. You have to be able to accept things that seem just plain weird, be able to laugh at yourself, and be at least a little adventurous. In fact, the more adventurous you are, the more fun you will have abroad. You will have time off in your new job, just as you do in your current one. How you use this time can make your experience a once-in-a-lifetime, treasured memory!
Working abroad might not be for everyone, but if you have an excited thrill in the pit of your stomach at the very thought of working abroad, you might just have the experience of a lifetime and kick-start your career, too!
