1. Administrative Assistant
This is an always in-demand job category, with over 250,000 new administrative assistant jobs opening up every year. If you want a surefire job, you can’t go wrong with a degree in administrative support or office management. This is also a position that offers advancement opportunities, as once you prove yourself, you can earn promotions and pay raises and find yourself in a very different department with a job you love even more in a few years.
2. Registered Nurse
There is a shortage of nurses in many hospitals, and this position pays well, too. The field is experiencing rapid growth with the aging baby boomer population, and will doubtless continue to demand new employees for another while yet. If you don’t have a problem with bodily fluids and medical procedures, consider this another surefire job offer once you’ve graduated.
3. Graphic or Web Designer
Although you can often find either job with a similar degree, the exact job responsibilities differ somewhat in most large companies (small companies might expect you to do both jobs). Graphic designers concentrate on marketing and designing images, while web designers create, maintain, and update websites for companies who want to reach out to the public in this era of increased web presence. You can experiment with self-employment or look for a position with a company.
4. Computer Science or Information Technology Professional
A computer support person or IT professional can often enter the workforce with just a two-year degree, and available positions include self-employment as a computer support person, or a regular career in IT support, a help desk, network administration, and more. There are plenty of options, and technology positions pay well, too!
5. Dental Hygienist
Yet another high-paying job with great job prospects, dental hygienists have flexible work schedules (often working part-time), earn plenty of money, and get to lecture people to brush their teeth. If you aren’t grossed out by teeth and tongues, you can count on getting a job as a dental hygienist at one of the many dental clinics in any major city.
Now you know that there is an alternative to grinding away at the four-year universities. Go for a two-year college degree and come out with a better salary, increased chances of getting a job in the field you trained for… and graduate two years ahead of time!
