When you come home from your work, what do you usually do? For many full-time workers, the answer is “turn on the TV, grab junk food, and relax on the sofa”. Unfortunately, this is the wrong answer if you want to maintain a healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle includes proper exercise and nutrition, getting enough sleep, and treating your body and mind well.
The benefits of a healthy lifestyle are obvious, and touted all over the news. A longer lifespan, decreased risk of a range of diseases and increased happiness are just a few benefits, all of which should be enough to get you interested in how to stay healthy while working full-time.
Everyone who is able to should exercise regularly. If you haven’t done much exercise in a while you can start slowly at first, but in order to reap the benefits of a fitness regime, you need to push yourself past your comfort zone. Adults require twenty minutes of very intense exercise three days a week, or thirty minutes of moderately intense exercise five times a week, to stay fit. You can break this up into chunks: a ten-minute run before you get ready for work and twenty minutes of lifting weights after work could do wonders for your fitness level and energy!
Nutrition is another big part of a healthy lifestyle. Cooking cheap, but healthy foods in bulk and then freezing or refrigerating extra portions is a great way to start. Eat fruits and vegetables whenever you can, particularly as snacks at work or after you get home. Make sure you eat a healthy breakfast, even if it’s a snack bar or bowl of non-sugary cereal, every morning to give yourself the energy to get through the day until lunchtime.
Most of us need eight hours of sleep every night to rest and recharge ourselves. Sleep is used to relax and restore your body, store memories, build up your immune system, and more. Make sure you don’t burn the candle at both ends – if you have to go to work early, go to bed early, too. This will help prevent energy-sapping naps after work, and stop your boss from chewing you out for falling asleep in a boring meeting!
Every individual’s physical health needs vary, but you should certainly get your annual physical checkups if possible, just to make sure that you are still healthy and get your doctor’s advice on any issues you have noticed. Listen to your doctor’s advice if he or she tells you to get additional testing performed or make any lifestyle changes. Treating your body well will pay off, and not just in reduced sick time you have to take off work.
Your mental health is just as important. If you notice any symptoms of burnout or depression, unusual changes in your personality, interests or lifestyle, or serious mood swings, talk to your doctor or a psychologist. Seeking help can help you stay healthy!
With a little effort you can reap the rewards of a healthy lifestyle, even if you work full-time.
