How to Work From Home

Written by: Zabrina Way

The opportunity to work from home is a relatively new development, as telecommuting, self-employment, and online work become more popular. This means that while we are all familiar with the etiquette of the office and how to find and keep a job, many people aren’t sure how to work from home, even when they have an idea how to find a work-from-home job.

In some ways, actually finding the job is the easiest part of working at home. Once you have the job, you have to adapt your routine and lifestyle to fit the demands of your new career.

Your mindset is one of the most important things to consider when working at home. You have to motivate yourself, and in order to do that, a routine is the easiest way to stay on track. If you know that you’re supposed to be doing something from a certain time to a certain time, you’ll be more focused and happy than if you’re bouncing around between tasks and not really accomplishing anything.

Schedule breaks into your day, as any job can get overwhelming if you do it for several hours straight. One of the ways working from home is flexible is in the schedule, so structure your workday accordingly. If you’re more awake in the morning, make a habit of doing your hardest work then and taking the afternoon off, and vice versa.

Others’ mindsets are a little harder to change, but no less important when you’re going about the process of learning how to work from home. You will quickly discover that people assume you are available anytime, when you might actually be very busy. Learn to say no, and to avoid answering the phone, door, or email. Make sure your friends and family know that you are at work sometimes and not available to rendezvous with them on short notice. Once others, including anyone you live with, realize this, your work life will become much easier!

The actual setup of your workspace deserves some mention, too. A traditional job would be located in an office, but when you work from home, you might not have a room set aside as an office. Setting up some space as your place to work will help you make the mental shift from home to work. Keep your office space clutter-free and make sure everything you need regularly is at hand; it’s worth setting aside an afternoon to clean and organize the space if this is a problem.

Learning how to work from home is a long process that involves mental adjustments for you and others, and physical alterations to your workspace. You will probably continue to make tweaks to your routine and where you work as long as you work at home, as you discover new and better methods.

If you have the right motivated mindset and manage your time properly, work from a dedicated, clean space, and have made it clear that you are not to be interrupted during work time, you can be extremely productive!
