Mothers today are choosing more and more to stay home with their infants and benefit from being able to care for their baby without leaving him in the care of a stranger for eight or more hours per day. Not only do mother and baby get to bond more, but this is a great way to escape the dull routine of 9-to-5 work.
There are several jobs for stay at home moms that are particularly popular because of their flexibility. Here are just three of the possibilities.
Crafts
You can sell your own, or assemble other people’s crafts. Either way, arts and crafts are a lucrative business if you go about it the right way. If you make your own, you have to invest in craft supplies at first (and make sure your kids don’t destroy them!), and have the dedication to complete projects when you’re tired out after a day of mothering, but you can make a name for yourself as an accomplished artist with enough hard work.
When assembling crafts for companies, make sure you choose one that has a good reputation and has been around for a while. Do research on the company before investing in a startup kit or paying any fees, just to make sure it isn’t a scam.
Writing
For those who have always wanted to be a writer and have a talent for knowing where a comma should and should not go, writing can be a great way to supplement your family’s income. You can try to apply to established content sites or find private clients. Either way, the amount you can charge depends on your ability and experience. Don’t let yourself be fooled into working very long days for minimal pay, however — do some research on the field and different places you can write for money.
Blogging is another type of writing that requires commitment (blogs should be regularly updated) and a passion for the subject you blog about, but you can make money from the ads on your site and build a following of people who look to you as an expert.
Teaching
You don’t have to be a certified teacher to help teach and tutor online these days. There are a number of sites that will hire you as a tutor if you have a college degree and, often, if you are a native English speaker (requirements vary by site). Some will require you to have specialized knowledge of the topic, but for subjects like English, you generally just need a bachelor’s degree, sometimes not even that much.
Some sites will also allow you to choose a subject to teach and structure your own lessons, being paid by the hour through the site for the lessons.
All three types of jobs can be rewarding and profitable if you pursue them for long enough. If you’re considering staying at home with your children and working, go ahead and join the over 5 million stay at home moms who are currently doing so!
