An assistive listening device helps a patient recover a percentage (if not all) of hearing loss. Through these aids, hearing impaired people are able to function quite normally. Hearing aids are the most common among these assistive devices. Those with hearing loss often resort to their usage.

Another kind of assistive listening device is a telephone amplifier. This magnifies the sound so that the hearing impaired can listen and respond to telephone conversations normally. With this device, there would be no need for a hearing aid while conversing on the phone.

Visual alerts help those who suffer from complete or severe loss of hearing. These are installed in the homes and give notice to people during specific times such as, when the alarm goes off, or when a person rings the door bell outside, or when a smoke detector goes off. Key signals are often light flashes or vibrations.

Radio and TV devices assist the hearing impaired as they use the radio and TV. With these devices, they wouldn’t need to turn the volume high. Devices come in the form of headphones and directional speakers. These and other assistive devices can be purchased from specialty stores that distribute hearing aids.
