The word "hardware" has had various meanings in the past, all of them referring to metal. Hardware refers to metal parts and fittings used to make wooden products stronger, more functional, longer lasting and easier to fabricate or assemble. In hardware stores, hardware refers to equipment such as key, locks, hinges, latches, corners, handles, wire, chains, plumbing supplies, tools, utensils, cutlery and machine parts. In military parlance, hardware refers to equipment such as tanks, aircraft, ships or munitions. The word also refers to trophies and other physical representations of awards. In technology, hardware refers to the physical parts of a computer, as distinguished from the data it contains or operates on, and the software that provides instructions for the hardware to accomplish tasks. A typical computer hardware contains the following parts: • motherboard which holds the CPU and main memory • power supply that holds a transformer, voltage control and fan • storage controllers that control the hard disk , floppy disk, CD-ROM and other drives • graphics controller which produce the monitor output • mass storage drives like the hard disk, and floppy disk • interface controllers that connect the computer to external peripheral devices like printers or scanners
