Have you ever wondered how it feels like to walk into your home and then all the lights and the central heating system automatically switch on? Welcome to the modern era, the world of home automation.

A typical home automation system is composed of a set of equipment categorized according to lighting control, home security, climate control, and home entertainment.

Automation of the lighting control lets you conserve energy as the lights just automatically turn on and off as necessary. Automating the home security system protects you from night prowlers and thieves, preventing them entry into your home without warning. Climate control on the other hand regulates the temperature surrounding your room. You get to save energy in this case, too, because it automatically switches off when there’s nobody in the house. The home entertainment system allows you the opportunity to listen to music by a mere click of the remote control.

Home automation is very flexible; you can combine all these categories into one or even create new settings, too. For instance, you can dim the lights while turning on soft music at the same time.

Many years ago, the concept of home automation would seem preposterous, but with technology constantly evolving, anything is possible.
Home automation is an emerging practice among homeowners of automating their household appliances through electronic means. Typically, homes are wired for four things: power, telephone, cable TV, and a doorbell.

Rooms can be automated so that it not only senses the presence of a person but can recognize who that person is. It can then set the appropriate lighting and temperature of the room, even turn on the TV or CD player according to a pre-programmed schedule based on the day of the week, the time of day, and some other factors. Automation can even pre-program an air conditioning to an energy saving setting when the house is unoccupied; then restore the normal setting once the occupants have returned.

Automation can also be used for security purposes. In case of a fire emergency, an alarm can trigger the lights in the house to blink which then alerts the occupants.

Home automation is really not new. It began in 1893 when the first television remote was patented. In fact, a remote control was used by the Germans during the First World War to control motorboats. The evolution of controllers and automation has since grown and continues to grow to this day.
Home automation is fast becoming popular nowadays. Like do-it-yourself hardware shops and enthusiasts, more and more people are now indulging in home automation. The once super-rich hobby is now made affordable to average homeowners.

Getting into home automation is actually uncomplicated, it simply requires few steps. It is not difficult because the hardest part will just be deciding on your plans and their choices. Your every imagination will surely be made possible but you must set your heart on a particular portion or plan first.

First, you need to be systematic. It's best to have a written layout of your plan. Without a specific and solid plan, it will be so easy to get sidetracked. Be clear about what you want to do, when you want to do it, and how you want to do it.

Second, you need to be simple about things. Have a solid foundation, a basic system. Begin with uncomplicated projects then move on to more elaborate ones as you make progress in your work. Start with simple tools and materials then proceed later on to more complicated ones.

If you find yourself confused or unable to solution things, seek help from a professional or from a friend who is experienced in home automation. Learning to listen will really widen your knowledge and expertise.
