Choosing a Color Scheme for your Kitchen

Written by: Chris Bibey

Choosing a color scheme for your kitchen is not something you should put together in a moment’s notice. Instead, you need to be very careful that you are coordinating every last detail. If you forget even one thing your entire color scheme may need changed in the near future. Is that something that you want to deal with?

Here are five details to consider when choosing a color scheme for your kitchen:

1. Flooring. With so many flooring options it goes without saying that the colors are going to vary. For instance, you could have anything from cherry hardwood floors to black ceramic tile. You can even find flooring that comes in different colors – especially if you are willing to consider vinyl.

2. Counters. Just like flooring, you have many color options when it comes to your countertops. As a large part of your kitchen, you need to make sure you choose a counter color that is going to fit in with every other detail. This is one part of your kitchen that everybody is going to see.

3. Cabinets. This is perhaps the most important part of your kitchen. For many, choosing a color scheme starts with the cabinets. This is definitely the case if you do not plan on replacing your cabinets. Every other color in your kitchen should be based off of your cabinets.

4. Walls. At some point you will have to choose a paint color for your kitchen. This is the color design element that will pull everything together. The right paint color can make all the difference in the world. With so many variations and shades available, you should be able to find just what you are looking for.

5. Accessories. This is the last thing that you will worry about, but it is important nonetheless. Just like the paint color that you choose, accessories can bring a room together. Once everything else is said and done you can begin to shop for accessories that match the overall scheme.

It may sound simple to choose colors for your kitchen, but once you get started you will find out how difficult it can be. Starting from scratch makes the process easy. But in most cases, you probably won’t have a blank canvas. Instead, you will be keeping the cabinets but changing the flooring or some variation of the details listed above.

Your kitchen is a very important room. Make sure you are 100 percent satisfied with your color selections before you begin construction and/or pull out your paint brush.
