Choosing Cabinets for your Kitchen

Written by: Chris Bibey

One of the most important features of your kitchen is the cabinetry. If you choose the right cabinets you are going to be very happy with the overall look and feel of your space. In order to make the right decision, it is important to consider the following details.

1. Color. Kitchen cabinets come in a variety of different colors and stains. For instance, white cabinets are very popular right now. But along with this, natural wood cabinets are always common. Of course, there is more than one type of wood. You may prefer cherry whereas somebody else is interested in oak. As you continue to look through your options you will probably find some that are not as common, such as black, green, etc.

2. Custom or stock. You have the option to purchase stock or custom cabinets. Both of them offer many pros and cons. Stock cabinets are the most affordable. These are available at large hardware stores and can be taken home the same day they are purchased. The downside is that these are not the highest quality.

Custom cabinets are high in quality, but you have to special order them. If you are interested in this option you should have a designer visit your home, measure what you need, and then place an order for you. Although custom cabinets cost more the quality is much better.

With custom cabinets you will have a bigger selection in terms of door design. Do you want a flat front? A raised front? With stock cabinets you have to buy what is available.

3. Size and layout. The size of the cabinets that you purchase will be based mainly on the layout of your kitchen. If you are keeping the layout the same you should know exactly what size cabinets will work best. But if you are going to make some changes, it is important to lay everything out to ensure that you purchase the right sizes.

4. Manufacturer. There are many companies that manufacturer kitchen cabinets. The more you consider the better off you will be. To start, you need to decide if you are going to buy stock or custom cabinets. This will give you a better idea of which manufacturers you are able to work with.

5. Installation. This may not be directly related to the cabinets that you choose, but it is an important detail to consider. Are you going to install your cabinets? Will you hire a professional? The more complicated the job gets the more you should think about hiring a professional with experience.

It is always best to see and feel kitchen cabinets before making a purchase. This way you know exactly what you are getting in terms of color and quality. Big box hardware stores, as well as kitchen design centers, will have plenty of cabinets on-site for you to see.

These five details should help you when selecting cabinets for your kitchen.
