Converting an Attic to a Bedroom: What to think about

Written by: Chris Bibey

If you are interested in converting your attic into a bedroom there is a lot to think about. In fact, you may find that this project is much more detailed than you initially believed. Although there is a lot that goes into this type of project, in the long run it is more than doable if you take the right steps and are dealing with an appropriate space.

Before you get started, think about these five details:

1. Hire a professional. Converting an attic into a bedroom is a big job – there is no denying this. Unless you have taken on projects like this in the past you need to hire a professional contractor with experience. You may pay more in the long run, but you will have the peace of mind in knowing that everything was done right.

2. Windows. Obviously, a bedroom is not a bedroom unless it has windows. There is a good chance that you will have to add at least one of these to your space. Again, this is something that a professional contractor will be able to help you with.

3. Ventilation. How much air does your attic get? There is a very good chance that it is not vented to receive central air or heat. This is something that you must think about adding if you are going to use the space as a bedroom. In the past, it was not big deal because you used your attic for nothing more than storage. But if people will be using the space on a regular basis, ventilation is very important.

4. Ceiling height. One detail that can quickly kill an attic remodeling project is the ceiling height. If your ceiling is not high enough to walk comfortably you are probably going to have to abandon this project before getting started. This is something that you should be able to determine on your own.

5. Structural support. As you know, most attics do not have regular floors on which you can walk. Instead, you have to be very careful to only step on the beams. If you make a false move you may find your foot in the room below you. Support is something that can and needs to be added during the remodeling project.

What do you think? Do you still want to convert your attic into a bedroom? If you are fine with the five details above, you may be ready to take the first step.
