Getting your utility bills lowered means more money in your pocket, where it can do you the most good. How can you save money on your monthly gas bill?
There are a few things you might consider to get your gas bill under control, regardless of what you use it for. For the most part, we’re using our gas for heating our homes. If that is true of you, then taking steps to make your home as well sealed and energy efficient as it can be is going to be the first step toward saving a remarkable amount of money.
In the winter months, particularly for those who live in the north or in the Midwest, the wind can howl and the temperatures fall to well below zero. Before that happens take stock of where the air leaks in your home are, and do something to change it.
A simple once over will save you hundreds each year on the cost of your gas bill, and seal up many drafts in the bargain. Older homes are prone to draft areas, but surprisingly, so are many newer ones.
Walk around your home and lay your hand over the outlets to see if you have a vast amount of cold air coming in there. If so, there are simple cheap ways to control that, which are small plates that come made of foam from your home store to seal off your outlets so they offer less draft. One might not be terrible, but consider how many outlets that you have.
Next, lay a hand beneath your windows and see if you’re feeling a cold draft. If you are, then you’re losing a lot of money … right out the window, as the saying goes. Plastic windows or shrink wrap will save a lot, or at the least some adhesive weather stripping beneath the window if you honestly can’t stand sealing your windows with plastic. If you have the option, storm windows are going to make a huge difference.
Check below the door and see if you get a large draft. Felt weather stripping around your door will shut that off. Many doors have gaps of half inch if top and bottom are combined and may send your heat bill through the roof.
Speaking of through the roof, if you have an attic, check it for good insulation. A single layer of insulation in the attic will save a lot of money. Heat rises and as it does; escaping through the roof is one way that we lose it.
Even if winter is half way over, it’s not too late to save some money by adding just a few small inexpensive things to your home to help you whittle away at your heating bill.
