Hiring a Contractor – Saving Money on Building Costs

No matter how skilled you are as a do it yourselfer, there is going to come a time when you need help with one or more of your projects. The question is how to get the best help that you can, keep it under budget, and make sure that you have a qualified contractor to assist you in what you need done for the right price.

The answer to that is to ask questions. In fact, ask a lot of questions. We’ve all seen or heard about the nightmare experiences that others have had with their building or home contractors. No matter what you need done, from furnace repair to a new basement, get estimates, compare companies and take references.

When you begin with your search for a contractor, know a little about what the job is going to entail. This means doing your homework. Openly stating that you know nothing about the job you want done is an invitation for an unscrupulous person to take advantage of your lack of knowledge.

While you may not be able to do the job, research it. The internet provides some excellent tools whereby you can find out what you need to have done, what it costs as a general rule, what special things you need to know and what the averages are in your area.

Bring in one contractor and get an estimate, but don’t ever accept the first one. Take at least two and compare notes. What is the cost differential and what services do they offer? Price alone isn’t the deciding factor. If you have to clean up after contractor A and not contractor B, you may have saved as much as a few hundred dollars in the cost of cleanup and haul away for something like an old furnace.

Ask for references! Most reputable contractors will be pleased to offer you their referrals, as well as show you their certificate of insurance, which is a vital part of hiring them. Accidents happen and making sure that you are covered if they do is going to save you pain in the long run.

Make your decision about your contractor hire based on price, service, good references as well as all of their licenses and insurance being in order. It will save you a lot in the long run to use a company that stands behind their work. While it sounds a little backward, sometimes paying a little more for the price may save you a ton of money in the end.
