Your electric bill, if you’re like the rest of us, adds up rapidly and amounts to about a half of all your utility bills. It’s not uncommon to get a power bill these days to the tune of 200 or more dollars and that’s not a tune any of us want to dance to.
The winter time sees your electric bill go up significantly due to the electricity that it takes to power the blower on many furnaces, while the summer time sees it skyrocket due to air conditioning costs, particularly in southern climates.
Saving money is something we’d all like to accomplish. A few tips can help you to keep more of your own money. Some of these will be common sense tips, so perhaps just a reminder is in order for some of us.
If you’re seeing a constant increase in the cost of your electric bill, take a few steps to get it back under control.
When you leave a room, shut the lights off. Don’t leave lights on overnight. Using a night light, a small plug-in variety saves a lot on the cost of electric, even if the only light that you have on is a low wattage bulb.
Teach your kids to turn out the lights by offering small rewards for remembering. A monthly night out at the movies to reward them for their efforts in lowering your bills is a great incentive.
Get your furnace filters checked and replaced in a timely way. The cost for this is nominal and the power that it can save is significant. A filter that is gunked makes your blower work harder to get the heat to you.
Don’t leave your computer on overnight. If you tend to fall asleep watching television, get a television with a timer that will auto shut if off in an hour or so and then use it.
Keep the doors and windows closed when you’re using your air conditioning. That sounds like common sense but it’s amazing how many people don’t think about having the furnace or air conditioning running and the windows open.
Small savings add up to big ones over time. While shutting off that light may only save you pennies a day, the monthly savings will amount to a lot more than you might imagine.
