No one will argue the fact that grocery prices have gotten more and more expensive. Convenience items of course cost us a lot more than normal purchases but even the regular things, staples such as coffee, sugar, flour and others have gone up in price significantly in just the last year alone.
What’s the best way to save money at the grocery store checkout and still eat the kinds of foods that you and your family need to stay healthy?
A good way to save a significant amount at the grocery store is to shop for groceries on a weekly basis, rather than stopping in daily or every couple of days to get the things you want or need.
Each time you go to the grocery store, it’s a safe bet that you’re spending more than you meant to and buying more than you came for. That means that the little items that you add extra add up fast. Buy a backup of things that you run out of frequently, such as ketchup or coffee. The savings that you will see from just having an extra on hand and not having to run to the store where you buy more than you went for will amaze you.
Make a list and get what’s on the list. A good way to use this as a tool is to make a menu for a week’s meals. Nothing elaborate, simply write down on a sheet, Monday, roast and potatoes etc.
Then make your list from the menu that you’re writing.
You can of course swap out meals, exchange days or reorganize them as you need to accommodate your time schedule but buying just what you need to make the meals will save money and you’re not going to wonder at the last minute, what’s for dinner. That leads to the temptation to do a quick take out or a few convenience items that cost a lot more.
Check the fliers that most grocery stores put out and find the items that you normally use on sale. While it’s a little less convenient shopping at two stores, we’ve found that it saved upwards of forty dollars on our overall grocery costs by doing so.
Use coupons. There are multiple internet sites out there today that offer you the chance to print your own manufacturers coupons. If you’re on the internet, (and you must be since you’re here reading this) get out there and start cruising those coupon sites and find some bargains for your kitchen.
