When you’re a parent, it’s hard to think of activities to keep your kids entertained all the time. Many parents resort to hiring nannies or having TV nights with their kids instead. While a little television won’t harm your children, you could be missing out on a great chance to bond with your kids and have fun.
1. Cooking
If you approach it with a relaxed attitude and don’t mind getting the kitchen messy, cooking together can be great fun. You might find you have a budding chef or baker in the family, too! Look up easy recipes for supper and let your kids help out with the dinner preparation. There are even simple, fun recipes written specifically for kids and teens; check Evelyn Raab’s cookbooks or search online for some examples.
You can also have a good time making dessert or snacks together. Baking, making ice cream or soda, and preparing homemade snack mixes for them to bring to school can all be good fun.
2. Board and Card Games
Dust off the old family board games; whether the game of choice is Monopoly, Pictionary, or Risk (or another — there are board games that everyone will enjoy), you’ll have a good time. Try older games like chess, checkers, crokinole, or even invent your own board game.
Card games are just as fun, and even cheaper to buy than board games. There are dozens of games you can play with a simple pack of cards, or little “indie” games with specially-designed decks of cards are a lot of fun to discover and play.
3. Paper Crafts
The ancient art of origami is surprisingly fun for kids. It requires a steady hand and patience, which is guaranteed to keep your children quiet! Buy them a book about origami and some special, square origami paper and have fun with them, figuring out how to fold the most surprisingly intricate figures.
A much simpler variant, but sometimes dangerous indoors, is learning to fold paper airplanes. A book on paper airplanes and a package of 8.5 x 11 printer paper can yield hours of amusement. Have competitions to see who can design the prettiest airplane, the furthest-flying airplane, or the airplane that performs the most stunts before crash-landing.
4. Exercise Together
You don’t have to invest in high-priced sports lessons or buy equipment to exercise with your family. Many families already have bikes, but don’t use them often. If you already have bikes for everyone, tune up the contraptions and take bike rides together through the neighborhood or nearby parks. If you don’t have bikes, just take walks instead and appreciate the life you see all around you, whether it be urban or natural.
5. Play With Them
Chances are, your kids already have toys like Lego, dolls, or others. For an afternoon, tell them that electronics aren’t allowed, and set up toys in the living room. You can build Lego castles, roleplay difficult school situations through dolls, or anything else your imagination allows. Become a kid again!
Have fun with your kids with one or more of these fun family activities, while bonding with them, and relaxing too.
