When you’re going on a vacation with your family, it can be an intimidating prospect. Memories of bad vacations may have already arisen in your mind, but don’t worry; you can plan a successful family vacation with a little effort.
Make sure your entire family agrees with the destination you have in mind. Whether you’re traveling to a nearby town or the other side of the country, there had better be activities for everyone, or tantrums and family feuds could spoil your vacation. Teens might be interested in exploring on their own, while parents just want to relax and forget the stresses of everyday life, and toddlers aren’t too fussy about the destination.
If you can’t agree on a destination, write the different destinations on slips of paper and let the youngest child draw one without looking. Whatever the result, make sure your family comes together and makes the vacation work by making the best of it. The experience might end up being more fun for you all than you think at first.
Visiting a foreign country can be a great vacation for everyone. If you haven’t been outside of your country, try to pick a better-known one where many people speak English and you won’t be stressed and trying to learn another language. For more experienced travelers, try a more unusual destination that’s off the beaten track and sparks everyone’s interest.
Whatever the destination you agree on, make the task of planning an itinerary a family activity. You might have to provide more input the younger your children are, but don’t exclude them, either. Don’t plan every second of every day; make sure your family will have some downtime to relax and think about the experiences they’ve had, and some free time, too. The unplanned time wandering around ancient districts or exploring modern malls can yield the most memorable moments.
Make sure you take into account your family’s preferences for the method of travel to your vacation spot. If someone is afraid of airplanes, see if it’s possible to take a train or car trip; likewise, if you have all decided you can’t get along in a car for a long period of time, try flying to your destination. If you’re driving, it’s particularly important to make sure the family continues to get along as much as possible. Look up tips for car travel and pack carefully, take frequent breaks, and stop to sightsee along the way.
Consider purchasing cameras for each of the travelers and learning to use them together, so that you can all record the memories of your vacation.
Once you’ve planned it out, packed everything you’ll need, double-checked that your kids have packed what they need, and loaded the car or put the bags into the checked area, relax and try to handle everything with patience. If something goes wrong on your vacation, handle it with grace and good humor and you’ll all enjoy yourselves more.
Your family vacation can be fun and stress-free with advance planning and input from every family member!
