School’s out, the most seasonable months of the year are here, and your kids are complaining of boredom. This is the perfect chance to plan some summer family fun!
1. Parks and Recreation
Your municipal Parks and Recreation department probably has sports classes, art lessons, and other types of activities that your entire family can participate in together. Another place to find them is your local YMCA, if you have one. You can purchase a family membership and exercise or enroll in activities together.
2. Start Collections
Your kids probably collect things — pretty rocks, Cheerios lined up on their placemat, or something else entirely. Why not start a new collection as a family? This is a great way to bond and create a tradition, without creating too much pressure.
Devote a corner of your house to a natural history museum for your kids to work on over the course of the summer (or longer), and you can go on family hikes to collect stray pieces of bark, rocks, non-endangered flowers, and so on. Show them how to make crayon rubbings of natural items like tree bark and leaves and see who can find the coolest-looking items to add to the museum.
You can also collect something in particular, like coins or stamps. There are still many independent coin and stamp shops across the country who will be more than happy to show you and your kids how to get started.
3. Organize Neighborhood Events
Let your kids’ imaginations run wild and come up with events for the neighborhood — a block party, circus, pet show, puppet show, or talent show can be heartwarming and hilarious. Practice the events with your kids and help them come up with routines, set up the event area, and let the neighbors know. This is a great way to get to know your neighbors if you don’t already, and take lots of pictures of everyone for your kids’ photo albums!
4. Start a Business
Sit down with your kids and think about what everyone is good at. Perhaps you can start a family business if you’re entrepreneurial. This is a great chance to not only make some extra money, but teach your children good money management skills, and other important life skills and values. Maybe you can all learn to make jewelry and sell it together at craft sales, clean out your closets and have a giant yard sale, sell baking at Christmas for those not talented in the kitchen, or come up with a totally new and different business idea.
5. Grow a Garden
For those who like outdoorsy activities, try starting a garden together. You can plan, buy plants for, and plant everything together. Perhaps you can work together to choose plants, or everyone can have a corner of the garden to himself or herself. Growing fruits and vegetables will save money and be very cool for your kids to try, too.
Summer is a great time for families to come together and try new things. Your kids will be entertained, and you’ll find yourself having fun, too!
