Buying a Home: How much is too much

Written by: Chris Bibey

If you are in the market for a new home you may be worried about biting off more than you can chew. The last thing you want is to get stuck with too much house. This is something that happens time and time again. In the end, the buyer is always disappointed. Instead of letting this happen to you, take the time to step back and realize what you really want.

Here are five details that will help you avoid buying too much home:

1. Size. The last thing you want to do is buy a home that is too big, even if you can afford it. For instance, if you are going to be living alone for the foreseeable future there is no reason to go out and buy a 5,000 square foot home. You may need to do this for one reason or the next, but it could lead to you having too much to handle.

2. Cost. Remember, you have to be able to afford the home that you purchase. This holds true both with the monthly payment, as well as the utilities and upkeep. When you buy a home that will cost you too much money there is a good chance that you will begin to regret your decision soon enough – this is not something that you want to go through at any point in your life.

3. What size home are you coming from? This should give you a very good idea of what you are looking for the next time around. For instance, if your home is the perfect size right now you will know exactly what you want in your new place. On the other hand, if it is too small (or too big) you will have a good idea of which changes you need to make. It is very important that you consider what you are coming from because this will determine how you feel about your new property.

4. Bigger isn’t always better. There are entirely too many people who believe that the bigger the home the better it is. Instead of thinking this way, buy what makes the most sense. There is no reason to buy a huge home just so you can say that you did. In most cases, this will lead to disaster.

5. To ensure yourself of making the right decision, check out homes of many different sizes. This will give you an idea of what is available, as well as what you should be buying.

With these five details in mind you will be able to avoid buying too much home.
