Have Goals as a Home Buyer

Written by: Chris Bibey

As a home buyer it is important to have goals. This way as you are searching you will be better position to get exactly what you want. While you may not be able to reach all of your goals, if you know what they are you should be able to meet or exceed some of them. Those who go into the buying process without any goals in mind usually find it more difficult to make a final decision.

Here are four types of goals that you can have as a home buyer:

1. Price goals. How much money do you want to spend on your new home? Once you have this number in mind you can make it a big goal of yours to stay within your limits. This may sound easy enough, but it is a goal that many people never meet. Out of all the goals you can set, this is probably the one that is most important. Spending too much on a home is a mistake that you never want to make.

2. Feature related goals. I want to buy a home that has a big deck. I want to buy a home that has a finished basement. All of these are goals based around features of a home. It goes without saying that you should have some “wants” in terms of the features of a property. Turn these into goals, and do what you can to make them a reality.

3. Size goals. How big do you want your home to be? Or maybe you are searching for a smaller property? Either way, have goals in mind concerning the size of your home as well as the size of your lot. For most home buyers, size is something that comes to mind all the time. It is important that you have goals set up to ensure that you get a home that is big (or small) enough to suit your needs.

4. Purchase date. If you are really interested in buying a home you may want to set a purchase date goal. For instance, I will buy a home and be moved in within six months. With this type of goal you are much more likely to get on the ball and start your search without wasting any time.

To give yourself the best chance of buying a home with success, set goals. The four listed above are a great place to start!
