2. Know the market. How much are similar homes going for in the area that you are interested in? The answer to this question will put you in good shape as you begin negotiations. Again, this is information that your agent can find for you. They have access to all the statistics needed to make an informed offer.
3. Know what you can afford. It does not matter what you do in terms of negotiations if you have no clue on what you can comfortably afford to spend. What is the highest you will pay for a home? This is the number you should use when negotiating. If you cannot get the property at this number, or less, it may be time to move onto another.
4. Don’t just think about the price. Most people only think about the price of the home when negotiating. While this is important, there are other things that you can work on as well. For example, what do you want the seller to include with the home? Are you asking them to pay any of your closing costs? These are all details that can be negotiated and worked into the final contract.
5. Don’t be afraid to walk away. Even though you may be in love with a home, you need to be willing to walk away if negotiations are not going your way. It can be hard to do, but the last thing you want is to make the wrong buying decision. You may have to wait, but another appealing property will come around soon enough.
