Single Story or Multi-level?

Written by: Chris Bibey

When shopping for a home you have many decisions to make. One of the most important is whether you want a single story or multi-level dwelling. Some people want to live on one floor. Others stay way from ranch style homes at all costs. As you know, this is a matter of preference. Just because you like one option does not mean that the next person will feel the same way.

The main benefit of a single story home is that you will never have to deal with steps. This is a big deal to many people, especially those who are older and do not want to risk falling. With that in mind, do not be surprised if you find a single story home that has a basement. This is particularly true in certain parts of the country. While you may have a basement, there is no rule saying that you have to use it.

Another benefit of a single story home is that the price is generally lower. Since you only have one level of living, you should be able to save money. This holds true no matter if you are buying an existing home or building a new one.

Now, let’s talk more about a multi-level. A home with at least two stories is going to give you more space. After all, you will have a main living floor as well as an upstairs. Much like the single story dwellings, do not be surprised if you have a basement.

Will I have to pay more? Generally speaking, two story homes cost more money because there is more space – this only makes sense. But this does not mean that they are all going to be out of your price range. There are many single story homes that are every bit as big as multi-levels.

The only way to decide which option is best is to check them both out. Once you walk through both types of homes you will get a better idea of what you prefer. Who knows, you may be torn down the middle.

There are pros and cons of both single story and multi-level homes. You have to decide what is most important to you, as well as which design suits you and your family best.

What do you think? Now that you know more about each option, you should be able to begin to formulate an opinion on what to buy.
