You must tend to your antique wood furniture if you wish to protect their value. As items get older, proper care shouldn’t be neglected. Also, furniture like dressers, tables, chairs, and etc., require a different kind of maintenance as compared with other antique items.
Antiques which you put to use daily should be treated with utmost care. With regular use, values definitely go down if left uncared for. Modifying the original finishing can lessen value as well. Never ever restore antiques this way.
Chips and fading cheapen antiques. So be sure to use place mats and coasters for glasses and cups when serving cold drinks and hot ones too. Moisture and heat can damage your pieces. For those used in the dining area, regularly use place mats and heat insulator pads before setting hot meals on the table. Place plates and decors carefully, never sliding them onto the table as this will cause scratches and dents. Light scratches may be a bit easy to remove with buffing. However, deep cuts and dents will need professional remedy.
Antiques suffer from spills so clean them off promptly. Solvent stains which damage antique coating should be blotted out with cloth or kitchen towels and tissue. Never wipe out chemical spills. This might widen the damage.
Dust your antiques regularly and use clean towels or cloths. The use of spray cleaners is discouraged.
