According to a particular study conducted by the World Health Organization, or the Global Burden of Disease study, approximately two-thirds of people who are suffering from various kinds of mental illnesses do not get the right treatment.
There are many reasons why most people afflicted with mental dysfunction do not get the needed treatment. The top reason however is that mental patients fear being marginalized by society. Many of these people could suffer from job loss, failed marriages, or social exclusion. Some of these patients are also unable to pay for the needed treatment, while some are not even aware of their condition.
Nowadays however, people with mental illnesses are no longer excluded from society or in the workplace, and some mental illnesses are already accepted by society. Social awareness and the availability of the right mental health information have made it possible for people to understand those with psychological dysfunctions more.
With the growing number of people with mental illnesses seeking out treatments, many professionals have also benefited from this. Today, psychologists and psychiatrists are able to enjoy lucrative salaries, due to their lucrative professions. Mental patients are also able to join self-help associations, so as to know more about their conditions.
There are organizations furthermore, which seek to monitor the fairness and effectiveness of mental health practices, as provided for by mental health professionals. Some of these organizations are the Center for Mental Health Services and the Federal Action Agenda for Mental Health.
