Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), is a technology that allows voice communication to travel using a broadband Internet connection. It is commonly known as Internet Phone, Internet Telephony, or Broadband Phone.
No matter what medium of communication you use, the important factor to consider is how to lower the cost of your telephone bills. Some users may want other features like conference calling or international calling (which is free of charge) and of better quality. All these needs can be addressed by Internet Telephony. All you need is a broadband (high speed Internet) connection, a computer, adaptor, or specialized phone.
There are some drawbacks to using VoIP, however. For instance, the person whom you are calling needs to be online and you must have the same internet phone software. The sound quality of your call is dependent on your connection speed and the internet connection speed of the person whom you are calling. It is impossible to hold a conversation if the connection is slow or is having a lot of traffic at one end.
There are three different VoIP service in common used today – the ATA (analog telephone adaptor), the IP Phones, and computer-to-computer. The ATA gives you access to connect a standard phone into your computer or internet for use with VoIP.
IP phones on the other hand can be directly connected to your router and all the hardware and software necessary to handle the IP call. Wi-Fi phones allow subscribing callers to make VoIP calls from any Wi-Fi hot spot.
With the computer-to-computer technology, what you need is a software program, a microphone, some speakers, a sound card and an Internet connection.
