The Food Chain and You

Ever wonder where you get the energy to do the things you do? Well, you get it from the food you eat. When you eat, some of it is digested, a process which releases energy.

But even the food you eat comes from a process called a food chain, which connects how each living thing gets its food. The food chain is basically divided into two eaters: animals that eat plants and animals that eat other animals.

This chain starts with plants which are called producers. Plants use light energy from the sun to produce food from carbon dioxide and water. Animals are the consumers. Basically, they can’t make their own food so they eat plants and other animals.

Animals that eat plants are herbivores and animals that eat other animals are carnivores. Animals that eat both plant and other animals are called omnivores. Man, who eats both plant and animals as food, belongs to this third category.

The food chain doesn’t stop there. Bacteria and fungi are consumed, in return, by the decomposers. The decomposers feed on the decaying matter, speeding up the decaying process that releases mineral salts back into the food for absorption by plants and nutrients.
