There are certain people who think that chewing tobacco and spitting it out does not pose any significant health concern; they couldn’t be more wrong. Actually, chewing tobacco is just as harmful to the body as lighting it up.
As you must know, tobacco contains nicotine, thus chewing tobacco can be addictive. Because of this nicotine content, you develop a tolerance for nicotine. This means that there will come a time when your body will no longer be satisfied with just a single tobacco to chew; you will want more and more. Besides the potential to become addicted to tobacco, chewing tobacco can cause gum disease, too. Perhaps, you may not realize it yourself but tobacco actually contains a lot of sugar and so the more you chew tobacco, the more sugar gets into your mouth, leading to gum disease.
Another thing that you must be aware is the ability of tobacco to increase your heart rate and your blood pressure, making you at risk for heart attack and stroke.
Chewing tobacco can also lead to oral cancer, affecting your gums, throat, mouth, tongue, or cheek. Oftentimes, surgery is needed in order to treat oral cancer, and there are unfortunate cases when it can lead to disfiguration.
So, when you think of all these things, you really cannot say that chewing tobacco is a lesser evil.
