Technology has shrunk the world to the size of a ball. Everything can be discovered by merely clicking at a mouse, even ethnic and regional identities which used to be shrouded in mystery and fear. The study of ethnic and regional identities usually focuses on the historical, cultural and political development of a specific people or sub-group. Within this category, one studies both the international context of a people and the ethnic strand they contribute to society. In studying these ethnic and regional characteristics, students come to understand the dynamic and changing political world in which they live and the effects these same dynamics have on the lives of a minority group. Politics usually affect a minority group’s lives because in most cases, it is the motivating factor that governs their rights to organization, citizenship, action, and governance. Individuals who take up this type of studies are usually interested in the workings of both national and international government systems and how they interact with each other. Most are active political activists and are concerned about community programs. Ethnic and regional studies emphasize the enhancement of key intellectual skills, the habit of questioning, debating, challenging, and shaping coherent and persuasive argument.
