Disabilities Law - Some Facts You Need To Know
If your child is autistic or someone with any other kind of disability, it is only normal to consider putting him in a special facility that can cater to his needs better. Certainly, you cannot simply place him in a regular classroom. You have, perhaps, been told that the school only provides inclusion, and you know this is not enough.
Actually, you do have other placement options as provided by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act or IDEA. Refer to Section 300.115 of IDEA; the section reads “Requires each public agency to ensure that a continuum of alternative placements (including instruction in regular classes, special classes, special schools, home instruction, and instruction in hospitals and institutions), is available to meet the needs of children with disabilities for special education and related services." The term continuum in this case runs along the scope of offering "supplementary aids and services in the regular education environment," as well as more help, special education, and so on.
By this, the school is therefore mandated to offer more than simple inclusion to children with certain disabilities. If your child, for instance, requires a more intensive approach to his education, the school should be able to provide for that, too.
There are certain school districts which use a cooperative type system, meaning a number of them pool their resources together to provide special education for kids with disabilities.
The basic thing to keep in mind is that every child has a right to free appropriate public education (FAPE), and special educational personnel must see to it that they are not violating this right.
Special Education for Disabled Children
The parents of a child with disability, particularly mental disability, are always concern about their education. They know for a fact that what they need is a special education where their needs will be taken care of.
Each public agency for the disabled kid was commissioned by the disabilities law to ensure that they will effectively back up the children's education. For this reason, most of these agencies managed to put up classrooms where special classes can be conducted. Aside from this, they also offer home education. These agencies often visit hospitals and other institutions as well to assist disabled kids and give special service to them. Most of the time, these services can be availed for free.
As a parent who worries about the welfare of your disabled child, it will serve you best if you will approach institutions that also care about their welfare. They will be able to guide you well on how to bring up your child and suggest a school where he or she will be taken care of --- probably a learning center that will understand their condition and needs. That way, you can have peace of mind because you know that your child is in good hands.
